Pamela is an advocate\, special educator\, college administrator\, author\, and most importantly\, a fellow citizen wanting to work with law enforcement to ensure SafeEncounters® for all. They are associates of the New Horizon Center for Autism Services. Pamela’s own positive encounters with law enforcement officers inspired her to bring this training to the police community to strengthen the relationship between officers and individuals with Autism.\nPamela wrote the book\, “Autistic ….and Thriving” with a chapter devoted to improving encounters between law enforcement and Autistic individuals in their communities. Participants will receive a copy of this book. \nCourse Description: The CDC estimates 5.4 million Americans have some form of Autism: about 1 in every 54 children born will have Autism. Autism is a neurological\, developmental disability that can affect\nbehavior\, social interaction\, communication and sensory processing. Each person with Autism has unique challenges and strengths. If an officer were to stop a person with Autism that has a social communication challenge\, that officer will need information on how to safely and effectively engage and communicate. The student will also acquire specific information in Defense Technology® OC products\, including all formulations\, blends and spray patterns\, along with the skills necessary to return to their agency and conduct in-service training.\n\nCOURSE OVERVIEW\nOne of the most common law enforcement tools in use today\, this course\nfocuses on the proper deployment of OC. The course is separated into\nlectured-based studies followed by a half-day of practical application\ndrills\, product testing and evaluation in the field. Unlike many classes on\nthis topic\, the information provided is direct from the manufacturer of the\nproducts used.\n\nThe course covers topics such as tactical considerations\, decontamination/\nfirst aid\, protective masks and criminal and civil liabilities\, and policies and\nprocedures with a focus on instructor development to prepare the student to provide in-service training and documentation for their agency.
