SUMMARY:SafeEncounters Autism Awareness for Law Enforcement
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Pamela Goines\, MEd.\, and Thomas Goines\, owners\, SafeEncounters® Training Pamela & Thomas are both proud parents of a son with Autism. Pamela is an advocate\, special educator\, college administrator\, author\, and most importantly\, a fellow citizen wanting to work with law enforcement to ensure SafeEncounters® for all. They are associates of the New Horizon Center for Autism Services. Pamela’s own positive encounters with law enforcement officers inspired her to bring this training to the police community to strengthen the relationship between officers and individuals with Autism.\nPamela wrote the book\, “Autistic ….and Thriving” with a chapter devoted to improving encounters between law enforcement and Autistic individuals in their communities. Participants will receive a copy of this book. \nCourse Description: The CDC estimates 5.4 million Americans have some form of Autism: about 1 in every 54 children born will have Autism. Autism is a neurological\, developmental disability that can affect\nbehavior\, social interaction\, communication and sensory processing. Each person with Autism has unique challenges and strengths. If an officer were to stop a person with Autism that has a social communication challenge\, that officer will need information on how to safely and effectively engage and communicate. This class will teach the fundamentals of what is Autism\, what is the person with Autism doing\, and how can officers recognize it and respond effectively to it. SafeEncounters® Training will equip your officers with tools\, tips\, and strategies designed to enable them to more effectively engage with persons with Autism. DESCRIPTION:HOSTED BY: Middletown Police Department \nADDRESS: Middletown Police Department\n1 Donham Plaza\, Middletown\, Ohio 45042 \nTIME: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. \nARIDE is a 16-hour course that is designed to train law enforcement officers to observe\, identify\, and articulate the signs of impairment related to drugs and alcohol with the goal to reduce impaired-driving incidents and crashes which result in serious injuries and fatalities. The course will be instructed by area Drug Recognition Experts (DREs). Registration is required. Upon completion\, officers will be able to analyze a collision and determine what happened before\, during\, and after the collision. Officers will be instructed on advanced techniques for application of mathematical principles and equations to determine vehicle speeds from tire marks\, the use of traffic templates\, driver and witness interviews\, human factors\, evidence from vehicles and the roadway\, field sketches\, measuring\, diagramming\, photography\, and preparing their case for court. Officers should be familiar with Ohio crash reporting forms and procedures before attending this course. Officers will need a calculator with square root function and will participate in outside exercises. \nNOTE: THIS CLASS IS GRANT FUNDED AND FREE TO OHIO OFFICERS.
